Overview of the Program
The Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry (AEPD) residency training program is a specialty program designed to provide knowledge and skills beyond the D.D.M. training and oriented to the accepted standards of the specialty practice.
The goal of the program in pediatric dentistry is to provide training for dentists to become proficient in providing both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The resident is trained to provide services in institutional, private or public health settings. This program encourages the development of a critical and inquiring attitude that is necessary for the advancement of practice, research and teaching in pediatric dentistry. The program encourages pediatric dentists to work in coordination with the other allied health service professionals.
The program provides the opportunity to extend the residents’ diagnostic ability, basic and advanced clinical knowledge and skills and critical judgement. Also, it offers experience in closely related areas to ensure that residents become proficient in comprehensive care. The core portion of the curriculum includes all subject matter necessary for development of a pediatric dentist. A supporting portion of the curriculum extends the residents educational experiences and enhances their ability to think critically and independently and to communicate information clearly, effectively and accurately.
